Renzi right to press for birthright citizenship law, says Khalid Chaouki

Democratic Party MPs fully support their leader Matteo Renzi’s decision to press for a new birthright citizenship law, Khalid Chaouki, MP has said.

Khalid Chaouki, MP Italy urgently needs a modern citizenship law that makes it easier for children born in the country of immigrant parents as well as those who have grown up here to become Italians, the MP said.

Such a law should recognise the human dignity of a million children who feel they are Italians but continue to be considered foreigners because of an outdated law, Mr. Chaouki said.

He called for concrete action by putting the birthright citizenship law on the parliament’s agenda this year.
